In the ancient Rome period they spread art and civilization. They took existing building styles and went further. A lot of the styles were adapted from the three greek orders. What I find very interesting is that they discovered concrete and this allowed them to get creative. They were able to create arches and domes and pretty much any kind of structure because of their discovery of concrete. The Colosseum was made of concrete and stone. In class we learned that the Maison Carre is one of the best examples of a Roman temple. You can see the Corinthian style that they used for their columns.
Ancient Rome interior design included mosaics and stucco.
They also had flat or vaulted ceilings.
How this style might be used in modern architecture:
Below is an example of a couch used in ancient Rome and a style of furniture that we use in modern design
Something I found that I thought was very interesting that is a modern design is this photo below. You can see the desk style and the style of the shades are adapted from ancient Rome design.
Emily, great job comparing the old with new! Your pictures are fantastic and I love the way you described how concrete was a total new discovery that changed Ancient Rome. I also liked how you tied in the artwork from the Greek period. Keep up the good work ;)
ReplyDeleteEmily, I really enjoyed the pictures you chose to help describe the vaulted ceilings and mosaic tile floors. These pictures helped put a picture to words, which will help me while studying!
ReplyDeleteYou did an awesome job showing pictures of the different aspects that you talked about. You included a lot of really good comparisons from that period and the modern times. Nice job!!!
