Ancient Rome

In the ancient Rome period they spread art and civilization. They took existing building styles and went further. A lot of the styles were adapted from the three greek orders. What I find very interesting is that they discovered concrete and this allowed them to get creative. They were able to create arches and domes and pretty much any kind of structure because of their discovery of concrete. The Colosseum was made of concrete and stone. In class we learned that the Maison Carre is one of the best examples of a Roman temple. You can see the Corinthian style that they used for their columns.

Ancient Rome interior design included mosaics and stucco.

They also had flat or vaulted ceilings.

How this style might be used in modern architecture:

Below is an example of a couch used in ancient Rome and a style of furniture that we use in modern design

Something I found that I thought was very interesting that is a modern design is this photo below. You can see the desk style and the style of the shades are adapted from ancient Rome design.

Prehistoric Greece

This week in class we learned about ancient Greece and a lot of information about their architecture, furniture, and designs. We focused on the three architectural systems which includes the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders. The Doric style is very plain but very sturdy and was used in mainland Greece. Something I found very interesting was that the Parthenon was considered the peak of the Doric order. The temple was dedicated to Athena and built in 5th century B.C.

The Ionic style is more elegant and a bit thinner and when looking at the picture below you can see that its decorated with a scroll-like design. This style was found in eastern greece.

The Corinthian style is often seen on roman temples and is the most elaborate of the three orders.

A lot of the design techniques were very geometric and a good example of this is the greek key

An example of where you might see this in todays designs:
